Dot gain (thick dots)

General YUPO (FGS) does not absorb ink and its surface is slightly rough, so it generates approximately 10% more dot gain compared to coated paper. It is necessary to print in consideration of this difference.
If possible, we recommend creating a profile that matches General YUPO (FGS).

The dot gain of SUPERYUPO (FRB [G]) and ULTRAYUPO (FEB [G]/FEBA) is smaller than General YUPO (FGS) and is close to that of coated paper. Therefore, a coated paper profile can be used with FRB (G) and FEB (G)/FEBA. (Difference in color tone reproducibility is not a problem)

Preventive measures

  • Be sure there is no excessive build up of ink.
  • Do not emulsify the ink excessively. (YUPO ink and synthetic paper inks tend to emulsify more easily than general-paper inks, so adjust the dampening water to the minimum level.)
  • We recommend that you carry out color proofing using the actual sheets and printing press.
  • Dot gain can be corrected by approximately 10% at the film stage or, in the case of positive plates, the exposure time can be increased when making the plates.
  • For CTP systems, be sure to make corrections using a tone curve (dot gain curve) during prepress.
