Binding

Binding

  1. 1. In principle, YUPO stocks are made in cross grain, when compared with pulp based paper. Please be sure to plan so that the top to bottom of the book aligns in parallel with the grain of paper.
  2. 2. Ajiro binding and wire binding are suited to YUPO as bookbinding methods. Adhesive binding can also be used. As a guide, if the book is over 5 mm thick, we recommend Ajiro binding, and if it is less than 5 mm, we recommend wire binding.
  3. 3. Loose-leaf style and spiral wire binding can also be used.
  4. 4. Ultrasonic sealing can be used when the page count is low.
    • The sealing conditions may vary slightly depending on the total thickness of YUPO pages to be sealed, but use the following conditions as a guide.
      Frequency 15 kHz
      Pressure 2 to 4kg/cm2
Compression time 0.3 to 0.5 seconds
    • The seal tends to become translucent.
Ajiro binding
This is the most powerful binding method.
The same adhesive as the one shown below for adhesive binding is suitable.
Adhesive binding
  • To increase the strength of the bond, make the gully slightly deeper for paper, and insert it in a wide range. Also, increase the quantity of the adhesive slightly.
  • For adhesives, hot melts that have adhesive strength even after being solidified by EVA are suitable.
  • To prevent thermal deformation of YUPO use adhesives at about 180℃.
Wire binding
If books are going to be exposed to humidity, use stainless steel wire. (To prevent rusting)
Thread binding
We do not recommend this method because if the thread is pulled strongly, the area around the pinholes in YUPO can tear.

Avoid using YUPO with natural paper.

When using YUPO with natural paper as a cover or as an inserted page, YUPO may curl or pull because YUPO swells when it comes into contact with the solvents in the ink used to print on the natural paper. This ruffling and curling cannot be fixed.
