New Product SUPERYUPO Double "FRBW" launched from September 1
Innovative synthetic paper suitable for double-sided printing using oil-based ink for paper!
August 24, 2020
From September 1, 2020, YUPO CORPORATION (Kanda Surugadai, Chiyoda, Tokyo; Masashi Watanabe, President, "Yupo") will market the "SUPERYUPO Double" (grade: FRBW) grade for oil-based offset printing suitable for double-sided printing using oil-based ink for paper.
"SUPERYUPO Double" is an innovative synthetic paper that retains YUPO's core characteristics of outstanding durability, water resistance and suitability for printing, while allowing double-sided printing using oil-based ink for paper without having to use special synthetic paper ink. The product is blended partially with plant-derived biomass resin, which helps reduce CO2 emissions.

Background
In Japan, the majority of offset printing methods is said to use oil-based ink, and since its foundation YUPO CORPORATION has continued its pursuit of research and development into "creating synthetic paper that can be printed with oil-based offset printers."
There are problems where the synthetic resin that is the main raw material of YUPO affects the solvents contained in oil-based ink, so the use of oxidative polymerization-type "synthetic paper ink" was required. To overcome this, "SUPERYUPO" was developed and went on sale in 2002 using oil-based ink for single-sided paper, and is regarded highly for use in applications like outdoor posters. Yet in double-sided applications, there were issues with pictures on the front side showing throw to the back, meaning YUPO's high level of print reproducibility could not always be achieved.
The new "SUPERYUPO Double" product applies novel technology relating to the penetration of ink, which reduces pictures showing through to the other side. This is the first time ever that YUPO can be used to achieve beautiful double-sided printing even with oil-based ink for paper. The result is that it can cut down costs for purchasing synthetic paper ink and time required for replacing ink. With the need to achieve a high level of productivity with fewer workers due to the reduction in the working population, YUPO has been enhanced to enable double-sided printing while retaining current printing equipment and materials.
Yupo will develop this product for various applications that use general paper as "'print media that is strongly resistant to water' capable of double-sided printing with offset printers using paper ink." With a sales target for FY2024 set at 800 tons, it will be marketed as a product "capable of doing more than paper" as a way of contributing significantly to the development and value-adding of the printing industry that has been our goal since our founding.
New product: SUPERYUPO grade: FRBW
Excellent quick-drying synthetic paper YUPO suitable for double-sided printing using oil-based ink for paper without having to use synthetic paper ink.
Product features
- 1.Oil-based ink for paper suitable for double-sided printing
It can be printed on using oil-based ink for paper in the same way as conventional SUPERYUPO, without requiring replacement of synthetic paper ink.
- 2.Outstanding quick-drying ink
The same quick-drying characteristics as conventional SUPERYUPO can reduce the time required for delivering printed material.
The drying time is approximately 40% shorter compared to conventional double-sided printing (ULTRAYUPO) using synthetic paper ink. (ULTRAYUPO: 5 to 7 hours, SUPERYUPO Double: 3 to 4 hours)- * Varies depending on printing conditions.
- 3.Sharp print quality unique to YUPO
Print reproducibility is almost the same as coated paper.
- 4.Blended with biomass resin that can help reduce CO2 emissions
It made partially with plant-derived biomass derived resin that can help reduce greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions.
Some of the fossil fuel-derived resin, which is the main raw material, is replaced with plant-derived biomass resin.
Expected applications
Various applications that use paper of 110 μm~300 μm thickness
